The coat of arms and flag of Cankova are prescribed by Decision Odlok o istovetnostnih simbolih in priznanjih Občine Cankova, adopted on 31 May 2002, and published in the official Slovene gazette Uradni list Republike Slovenije, 51/2002, and its amendment Odlok o spremembah Odloka o istovetnih simbolih in priznanjih Občine Cankova (text).

The Decision says: "The flag is five-striped blue and white with a blue square at hoist containing the flower and two wavy lines from the coat of arms."
The two wavy lines represent the stream Kučnica, which has been the border between Austria and Hungary for thousands of years, and the river of Lendava that now forms a man-made lake for power plants. The Kučnica valley was the place of numerous daffodil blossoms, nowadays quite rare due to irrigation.

The symbols were designed by Valt Jurečič of Heraldika d.o.o. and Heraldica Slovenica, who kindly provided drawings from which the images shown on this page were made.

The Decision further says: "For vertical hoisting the emblems in the flag are rotated so that they still stand upright."
