The Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Husbandry of El Salvador (Ministerio
de Agricultura y Ganadería - MAG) has its roots in the Code of Agriculture
promulgated in 1893. The Executive established in 1899 the Central
Administration of Agriculture, with branches in each department of the country.
The Administration created the Directorate General of Agriculture on 27 April
1902 and founded a Chemistry laboratory and a School of Agronomy (1910, the
first in Central America). Experimental stations and commercial fairs were
promoted, as well as cotton cultivation, fish breeding and use of fertilizers.
The Secretariat of Agriculture was established by an Executive Decree issued
on 1 March 1911 and published on 2 March 1911 in the El Salvador official
gazette, No. 50, which organized the government of President Manuel Enrique
Araujo. The Ministry of Agriculture and Industry was established by Decree No.
134, issued on 14 October 1946 and published on 22 October 1946 in the El
Salvador official gazette.
