The municipality of Karkamış (10,587 inhabitants in 2012, 3,034 in the town of Karkamış) is located 80 km southeast of Gaziantep, on the border with Syria. Karkamış was established as a district municipality, separating from Nizip, by Law No. 4,644 promulgated on 20 May 1990.
Located on river Euphrates, Karkamış was one of the most important towns in ancient Mesopotamia. The town has kept remains from the Hittite, Roman and Hellenistic periods. The development of the town was boosted again in the late 19th century due to the building of the railway heading to Baghdad.

The Karkamış Iron Bridge was built over the Euphrates in 1917, here Turkey’s border with Syria. It was the longest and most technologically advanced bridge of its day. 870 meters long, it has 8 arches each spanning 100 meters. It has an 80 cm-wide pedestrian walkway on the Syrian side.
Still used by trains today, the bridge delineates the border with Syria, and is the point at which the Euphrates exits Turkish territory, 1.5 km southeast of the town of Karkamış.
