Horse javelin, an equestrian game originating from Central Asia, became a war game in the 26th century. The most popular sport in the Ottoman Empire, horse javelin was banned in 1826 by Sultan Mehmet because it was deemed too dangerous. Subsequently authorized as a show game and common in Anatolia 50 years ago, horse javelin recently re-merged in the Erzurum, Erzincan, Uşak, Bayburt, Ankara, Manisa, Kars, Sivas and Malatya Provinces.

Jereed (Turkish: Cirit) is a traditional Turkish equestrian team sport played outdoors on horseback in which the objective is to score points by throwing a blunt wooden javelin at opposing team's horsemen.
