OKÜ (website) was established by Law No. 5,562, published on 29 May 2007 in the
Turkish official gazette.
OKÜ has campuses in Osmanye (Karacaoğlan central campus), Kadirli, Bahçe, Düziçi and Erzin. OKÜ is composed of 6 Faculties, 2 Institutes, 3 Schools, and 5 Vocational Schools.
The university is named for the semi-legendary bardic shaman Korkut Ata,
aka Dede Korkut, considered as the author of Kitâb-i-Dede (Dede's
Book), a masterpiece of Turkish medieval literature. Written in the 15th
century in north-eastern Anatolia, then ruled by the Akkoyunlu Turkmens,
the book is a compilation of epic tales that incorporate archaic
elements from the central Asian, pre-Islamic times.
Korkut Ata is revered in Kazakhstan as Pîr, the master of shamans and bards. His alleged tomb is located on the banks of river Syr Daria,
close to the town of Kazalinsk.
