Kaptanoğlu family is one of the oldest shipowners in Turkey with hundred years of maritime experience and tradition. H. Ismail Kaptanoğlu, the founder of Kaptanoğlu shipping, was a captain in his father’s ships in the beginning of the last century. Those days were the last period of Ottoman Empire when shipping in the empire's territory was controlled by foreign companies. Kaptanoğlu was one of the pioneer families in shipping business in Turkey.
Just like many others, the company started to grow with the Republic of Turkey. H. Ismail Kaptanoğlu and his five brothers worked with their father until 1950. Then, he established his own company and later, his three sons joined him to form one of most well-know family shipping companies in Turkey. H. Ismail Kaptanoğlu was one of the founders of Turkish Shipowners Association. His sons carried on their father’s mission and they have been serving Turkish shipping community as well as fulfilling official duties. Today, Kaptanoğlu Group (website) is active in almost every segment of shipping business such as shipowning/operating, shipbuilding and agency services.
