Nemtas Shipping (website) was established in 1981 in İzmir as Nemtaş Nemrut Liman Isletmeleri A.S. (Nemtaş Nemrut Port Operations S.A). Taken over in 1988 by Türkiye İş Bankası (Turkey's largest bank and the first bank founded after the proclamation of the republic), the company acquired in 1995 its first bulk carrier, M/V Nemtaş, and, in 2001, its first newbuilt handymax, M/V Nemtaş-1. The fleet was subsequently rejuvenated with the launching of M/V Nemtaş-2, M/V Nemtaş-4, M/V Karsiyaka, and M/V 26 Augustos.
The company website claims that the present-day fleet is composed of 3 supramax and 2 handymax bulk carriers, totally 252,959 dwt. The fleet-dedicated page, however, states that "all vessels have been sold out".
The company is also the main shareholder of Gemport Port & Warehousing Facilities Co., the first private port established in Turkey.

The flag of Nemtas is white with the company's emblem and name, "nemtaş" in blue, and, below, "denizcilik" (shipping) in gray. Another, simpler flag, is white with only "nemtaş", in blue.
