The Town of Winthrop, Maine received a one-of-a-kind flag during the US Bicentennial Celebration in 1976, according to a news photo in the "Kennebec Journal" 12 February 1976 edition, p. 31. Attached is the photo.
The caption reads "Winthrop's own. Lawrence Irvine of Winthrop designed this Bicentennial flag featuring the world record hornbeam tree at the Bearce Road cemetery. John Ogden of Hallowell did the silkscreening. Displaying the one-of-a-kind flag are Clayton Bragdon, Winthrop town manager, and Mrs. Carol Tani, chairman of the Winthrop Bicentennial Committee. (LaVallee photo)"
The flag's inscriptions are "TOWN OF WINTHROP", "1776", "1976", "HOPHORNBEAM", and "Metcalf Cemetery". The graphic depicts a tree and tombstones. The colors are unknown to me.
