According to the August 23, 1913 issue of the Youngstown Vindicator, the flag
of Lisbon was adopted at a special meeting of the council and the business
association on the night of August 22, 1913. This flag was presented to the
municipality by the Attorney Lodge Riddle on September 11 as part of an Old Home
Week celebration, which occurred on its 110th year of foundation, then was
hoisted accompanied by a rifle salute.
It is a modified version of the
flag of the Kingdom of Portugal, which fell just
a few years prior to its adoption. It is a bicolor of blue and white, with a red
shield centered, outlined in yellow. A buckeye tree is depicted in the center,
appearing to be in black and white. However, the article describes the tree as
being outlined in white and does not reference the yellow outlining, so it is
possible this original version was a bit different.
