While participating in an activity related to the development and selection
of a new flag for the state of Utah in January 2022, the Ogden Youth City
Council (YCC) suggested that Ogden should not be the only city of the largest 10
in the state which does not have a flag. Meetings with the City Council and
administration led to the Ogden Flag Design Contest being announced in April
2022. A total of 215 designs from 158 artists (including 81 local students) were
submitted to and reviewed by the YCC; on the basis of NAVA Good Flag, Bad Flag
principles of flag design,105 designs were sent to the Ogden Flag Design Review
Committee (DRC), an ad-hoc committee comprised of Ogden City administration,
City Council, YCC, Ogden Downtown Alliance, Visit Ogden, Weber State University,
and Ogden business owners. After 3 meetings and variations of some designs by
Ogden City Council staff, each committee member chose their top 5 designs. The
top 10 designs of the DRC were sent to the City Council, which reduced the
designs to 3 finalists by March 2023. Based on recommendations from the YCC,
DRC, and the Ogden City administration, a flag created by native Ogden graphic
designer Cody Hockin was chosen and then adopted by the Council on May 16, 2023.
Description of flag by Mr. Hockin:
The focal point of this design
centers on an iconic white mountain range that symbolizes the often snowy
Wasatch Mountains that so many Ogdenites love. This three-peak mountain range is
set in a dark blue circle that creates a high-contrasted image to draw your eye
into the design. You will also notice a dark blue triangle centered below the
tallest peak. This represents the individual or the family that is here in
Ogden. The dark blue circle creates the letter “O” which obviously stands for
“Ogden.” Symbolically an “O” resembles a community, connection, or a collection
of people. With the mountain range breaking outside the “O” signifies the
welcoming and inclusive nature of the people that live in Ogden and the culture
of tourism that is ever growing.
I specifically chose the colors based
on the color scheme of the new brand identity for Ogden. Blue in flag design can
represent “Freedom” and “Determination.” The white you see in the flag
symbolizes this sense of peace and harmony found here in the greater community
of Ogden.
