Description of the flag

The flag of the Society of Colonial Wars in the State of New York appears at www.colonialwarsny.org/flagny.htm.

The flag consists of a Saint George's Cross (red cross on white field) with the State Society's seal at the center. The seal has altered arms of New Netherland, representing the Dutch colonial presence, on a light blue field strewn with gold fleur-de-lis, representing the French colonial presence. Inside a border of gold braid is a burgundish ribbon reading SoCiety oF CoLoNIAL WARS IN THE STATE oF NEW YoRK [yes, o's lower case; all other letters upper case, words separated by raised dots, sans serif font]. At the bottom, between the ends of the ribbon, in white letters 1607--1775. See www.colonialwarsny.org.

The image of the seal on the flag however, changes some of the colors of the seal- the blue ground and the black beaver on the New Netherland arms are now both red, and the color of the ribbon is bright red, similar or identical to the St. George's cross. These changes were probably done for better visibility.

The New York state society is one component of the national General Society of Colonial Wars, a heritage organization open to male descendants of those who fought in colonial wars in America between 1607 and 1775.
