Michigan State University's most popular logo flag is this style "S" flag. Such a flag is (or has been) pretty popular among many universities in the US whose middle name is "State". For example, North Carolina State [University] once used this same flag except the flag was red instead of green. I have also seen the occasional rare maroon Mississippi State flag with the white letter "S".

The page at msuspartans.cstv.com/trads/msu-traditions.html states the colors were adopted beginning in 1899 with green for the monogram for those in
intercollegiate sports. With green and white fully adopted by 1903 with the first full-time director of athletics.

The white S on green flag, without wording, is what is used on campus
buildings.
