National University of Comahue (Universidad Nacional del Comahue - UNCo) was established by Law No. 19,11 of 15 June 1971. Classes
started on 15 March 1972. Comahue, a Mapuche word meaning "a rich valley", is the name of the region of Argentina encompassing northern Patagonia, that is Neuquén and Río Negro Provinces.
UNCo is headquartered in the town of Neuquén (Faculties of Environment and Health Sciences, Economy and Administration, Humanities, Computer Science, Engineering and Tourism), with two secondary campuses in San Martín de los Andes and Zapala (Neuquén Province). The Faculties of Education Sciences and of Medical Sciences are based in the town of Cipoletti, part of the Neuquén metropolitan area. UNCo has units in Río Negro Province: School of Marine Sciences (San Antonio Oeste), University Regional Centers of Bariloche (San Carlos de Bariloche) and of the Atlantic Zone (Viedma), Faculties of Agricultural Sciences (Cinco Saltos), of Food Science and Technology (Villa Regina), of Law and Social Sciences (General Roca), and of Linguistic (General Roca). Classes are also given in other towns of Neuquén, Río Negro and Chubut Provinces.

The flag of UNCo is light blue with the university's emblem in the middle.
The emblem of UNCo was designed by Julio Bariani, a visual communication designer. Based on traditional elements of the Mapuche culture, it is aimed at reviving and revamping the cultural symbols of the Comahue region. The design originates in an image found on a cultrum (Mapuche traditional drum), representing the mythical division of the Mapuche space. It incorporates sketchy representations of humans, as found in several Mapuche handicrafts and rock paintings. The elements were harmonized to obtain a circular image conveying the required visual impression. The circle, surrounding the emblem, is made of linear figures forming a play of humans coming in and out. The structure of the individuals corresponds to a generalization of human representations. The arms in open position increase the feeling of unity and communication. To summarize, the emblem is expected to mean:
