São Gonçalo do Amarante

The municipality of São Gonçalo do Amarante (99,724 inhabitants in 2016; 251 sq. km) is part of the Natal Metropolitan Region.

São Gonçalo do Amarante emerged in 1609 as Uruaçu, a small village established in the early 17th century by Estevão Machado de Miranda near river Potengi. The colonists were slaughtered on 3 October 1645 by the Dutch in an event still remembered as the Uruaçu Massacre. After the Dutch departure in 1698, the area was re-settled by Portuguese colonists from Pernambuc. In 1710, Ambrósio Miguel de Sirinhaém and Pascoal Gomes de Lima erected a chapel dedicated to Blessed Gonçalo de Amarante (1187-1259), a Portuguese hermit popular in Brazil.

São Gonçalo do Amarante was granted the status of town and separated from Natal in 1833. A subsequent epidemic of cholera nearly suppressed the town, which was reincorporated to Natal by Law No. 604. Re-established on 3 August 1874 by Law No. 689, the municipality of São Gonçalo do Amarante was suppressed again five years later and incorporated to Macaíba. Re-established for the second time by Decree No. 57, the municipality was suppressed on 30 December 1943 by Decree No. 267 and renamed to Felipe Camarão. The municipality of São Gonçalo do Amarante was eventually established on 11 December 1958 by Law No. 2,323, separating from Macaíba.
