Municipality

The municipality of Cerro Grande (2,465 inhabitants in 2014; 7,344 ha) is located 400 km of Porto Alegre.

Cerro Grande was established by 65 families of Italian and Polish origin. The place is said to have been named in 1890 by a group of hunters who were impressed by a big hill ("cerro grande").
The district of Cerro Grande was established within Palmeira das Missões by Municipal Law No. 478 promulgated on 27 August 1959. The municipality of Cerro Grande was established by State Law No. 8,564 promulgated on 13 April 1988, and inaugurated on 1 January 1989; its limits were changed by State Law No. 9,008 promulgated on 11 January 1990.
