Municipality

The municipality of Gramado Xavier (4,190 inhabitants in 2014; 21,752 ha) is located 160 km of Porto Alegre.

Gramado Xavier is named for "gramados" (lit., "lawns"), resting places used by tropeiros, and Custódio Xavier, one of the earlier colonists of the place.
The district of Gramado Xavier was established within Santa Cruz do Sul by Municipal Law No. 442 promulgated on 19 July 1956, separating from the district of Serafim Schmidt. The municipality of Xavier Gramado was established by State Law No. 9,578 promulgated on 20 March 1992.
