Municipality

The municipality of Águas Mornas (5,546 inhabitants in 2010) is located 40 km of Florianópolis.
The name of the municipality (Hot Springs) refers to the radioactive water that gushes forth at a temperature of 39°C, and is considered as "one of the best in the world".

Águas Mornas was settled in 1837 by 43 German and one Danish colonists coming from São Pedro de Alcântara, who established the Vargem Grande colony. The Santa Isabel colony, named for Princess Isabel, the daughter of Emperor Peter II, was founded in 1847 by 164 German immigrants, emancipated on 28 May 1869 and elevated to a district in 1902, seated in Rancho Queimado. The colony of Teresópolis, established by a Decree issued on 3 June 1860, was settled by 40 Rhenan and Westphalian immigrants; emancipated in 1869, it was elevated to a district in September 1886.
The municipality of Águas Mornas was established on 19 December 1961, separating from Santo Amaro da Imperatriz.

Description of the Flag

 The flag and arms of Águas Mornas are prescribed by Municipal Law No. 449 promulgated on 18 October 1994.

Article 4.
The features of the municipal flag shall obey the following rules.
I - The flag's width shall be 14 units.
II - The flag's length shall be 20 units.

Article 5.
The municipal flag shall have for colors green, white and red, placed diagonally. Green shall be placed in the flag's upper part, as a symbol of ecological potential, forests, fields and agriculture; white, representing peace, shall be placed in the flag's center; red, as a symbol of firm determination and dedication to work inherited from the immigrants by the people of Águas Mornas, shall be placed in the lower part of the municipal flag. The upper left angle, green, shall be of 1.40 unit. The upper right angle shall be of 6.30 units. The white stripe shall be of 6.30 unit in width. The lower left angle, red, shall be of 6.30 units and the lower right angle shall be of 1.40 unit in width.

Article 6.
The municipal flag of Águas Mornas is charged in the center with the coat of arms of the municipality, 5.5 units in width on 5 units in length.

Article 7.
The two sides of the flag shall be exactly identical.

Article 9.
The coat of arms shall be of 4 units in width on 3.5 units in length, with the following arrangement:
I - The shield shall be composed of a gray field, charged in the center with a blue spa fountain on a black support, representing the potential of the municipality as a spa. The shield shall have for frame two quadrilateral sequences green and red.
II - The shield shall be placed on a decorative support also used as the base for the two supporters, representing the German immigrants who colonized the municipality by establishing the Vargem Grande, Santa Isabel and Therezópolis (sic) colonies, in 1836, 1846/7 and 1850, respectively. A woman shall stand dexter and a man sinister. The woman shall wear a scarf on the head and a farmer's dress. The man shall wear a Tyrolean hat and hold a hoe, symbolizing the German immigrants' rural life, as well as culture and history. The shield shall measure 1.96 unit in length on 3.10 units in width.
III - The scroll shall be red, inscribed "Águas Mornas" and letters "SC" meaning Santa Catarina state. The dexter part of the scroll shall be inscribed "19" and the sinister "61", recalling the years of political and administrative emancipation of the municipality of Águas Mornas, respectively. The writing shall be black, in Gothic letters. The width shall be 0.56 unit.
IV - The coat of arms shall be surmounted by black medieval walls, representing the deliberative power of the Municipal Government.

The Law abrogated the original symbols of the municipality, which were prescribed by Municipal Law No. 132 promulgated on 6 September 1978.

Article 2.
The coat of arms is composed of a circumference split by a diameter and applied on a truncated triangle, featuring in the lower part four white mountains, at their respective foothill on the whole length, a green line representing agriculture. In the center, a waterfall representing the municipal spa. In the upper part, a group of five dark green mountains under a burning sun. Beneath the mountains a field and a plow. The parts represent the soil proper. On the base of the triangle supporting the shield, the municipality's emancipation year, its name and initials S.C. (Santa Catarina).

Article 3.
The flag is composed of a Maltese cross in the background charged in the center with the coat of arms of the municipality. The Maltese cross has green vertical arms, representing forests, fields and agriculture, and red lateral arms, representing the revolutionary force of municipal progress. On the white field charged with the Maltese cross and the shield are two diagonal lines crossed in the shield's center, which represent the union of the people of Águas Mornas.

Article 5.
The features of the municipal flag shall obey the following rules.
I - The flag's width shall be 14 units.
II - The flag's length shall be 20 units.
III - The coat of arms shall have a radius of 3.5 units.

Article 6.
The two sides shall be exactly identical, mirroring each other.
