Municipality

The municipality of Caxambu do Sul (4,406 inhabitants in 2010; 14,058 ha) is located on the border with Rio Grande do Sul, 600 km west of Florianópolis.

Caxambu has two reported etymologies, the African words "cacha", "a drum", and "umbu", "music", the "caxambu" being the drum used to perform that music, and the native words "caa" ("a bush"), "xá", "to see", and "umbu", "a stream", therefore "a bush mirroring in the stream".

Caxambu was settled in 183 by colonists coming from Rio Grande do Sul. Caxambu was elevated the 6th district of Chapecó, then in Paraná, by Municipal Law No. 21 promulgated on 25 April 1919, and inaugurated on 21 July 1921. The municipality of Caxambu do Sul was established by State Law No. 866 promulgated on 14 December 1962, and inaugurated on 16 January 1963.

The flag and arms of Caxambu do Sul are prescribed by Municipal Law No. 159 promulgated on 29 December 1972.

The municipal flag of Caxambu do Sul, designed by the heraldist Arcinoé Antonio Peixoto de Faria, shall be quartered in saltire, the quarters, in turn green and red constituted by four white stripes superimposed with red stripes, placed two by two in bend and bend sinister and running from a central white disk charged with the municipal coat of arms.

The coat of arms applied on the flag represents the municipal government while the white circle inscribing it represents the town proper as the municipal seat. The circle is the heraldic symbol of infinity, as a geometric figure with neither a beginning nor a end. White is a symbol of peace, friendship, work, prosperity, purity and religious feeling. The white stripes charged with black stripes represent the spread of municipal power all over the territory. Black is a symbol of prudence, wisdom, moderation, authority and firmness. The green and red quarters represent the rural estates scattered over the municipal territory. Green is a symbol of honor, civility, courtesy, glee, abundance and hope; hope is green since greening fields in spring promise profuse harvests. Red is a symbol of fertility, dedication, patriotic love, audacity, intrepidity, courage and valiance.

The coat of arms of Caxambu do Sul were designed by the heraldist Arcinoé Antonio Peixoto de Faria.

The Samnite shield, used to represent the arms of Caxambu do Sul, was the first style of shield introduced to Portugal under French influence. The mural crown surmounting the shield is the universal symbol of coat of arms of domains, classifying the town as of third rank or municipal seat. Argent is a symbol of peace, friendship, work, prosperity, purity and religious feeling. In the shield's center, a caxambu vert - green outlined argent (silver) and gules (red), makes the arms canting. Vert (green) is a symbol of honor, civility, courtesy, glee, abundance and hope; hope is green since greening fields in spring promise profuse harvests. In chief the armed wheel recalls St. Catherine's martyr tool, patron and namesake of the state where Caxambu do Sul is located. The wheel is flanked by a hunting horn in cowboy style sable (black), recalling cattle-breeding, of great significance for the municipality's life. Sable (black) is a symbol of austerity, prudence, wisdom, moderation, authority and firmness. The pig's heads sable (black) recalls pig-breeding, the municipality's main source of income. The plow sable (black) indicate the economic resources supplied by agriculture.
As outer ornaments, the logs proper recall timber industry, while maize, beans and soybean represent the main products of the generous and fertile soil.
On a scroll gules (red), a symbol of dedication, patriotic love, audacity, intrepidity, courage and valiance, in letters argent (silver) the identifying toponym "Caxambu do Sul" surrounded by its date of political emancipation, "14-12-1962".
