The municipality of Rosana (19,691 inhabitants in 2010; 74,122 ha) is located in northwestern São Paulo State, on the borders with Mato Grosso do Sul and Paraná, 760 km of São Paulo. The municipality is made of the town of Rosana proper and of the district of Primavera, established by Municipal Law no. 215 of 8 April 1994.

Rosana was founded by the "Camargo Correia" company, at the end of the Dourado branch of the Sorocabana railway, close to the confluence of rivers Paranapanema and Paraná. Named for one of the daughters of Sebastião Camargo, the new town belonged to the municipality of Presidente Epitácio. The district of Rosana was established by Law No. 8,050 of 31 December 1963. The municipality of Rosana was established by State Law No. 6,645 of 9 January 1990; following a plebiscite organized on 5 November 1989, and inaugurated on 1 January 1993.
