Clube Esperia, Sao Paulo

Hesperus Club, Sao Paulo

Clube Esperia (SP), Brazil image by Joseph McMillan

Founded 1899, the first rowing club in Sao Paulo. It was formed by a group of Italian immigrants who named the club after a rowing club in Turin and is now, judging from the website, a very elaborate and prominent all-purpose sports and social club. The word Esperia in Italian, according to the club website, is the same as the English Hesperus, the lands in the west in ancient mythology. The flag as shown in the historic section of the site is white with a light blue diagonal stripe and a light blue star in lower hoist.
