A new flag has been adopted by the community of Gabriola Island, British
Columbia, Canada, as its flag. Gabriola is only the second Canadian Gulf
Island, after Salt Spring Island, to create and adopt an island flag.
The flag was designed by Gabriola resident Steve Earle following a design
competition that was sponsored by the Gabriola Historical and Museum Society
in May, 2017. Earle's design was one of more than 50 submissions, and was
chosen by islanders who voted for this design as their choice.
The blue
shape is meant to depict the Malaspina Rock Galleries that were first
discovered in 1792 by Spanish explorers Dionisio Galiano and Cayetano Valdez,
and named for Spanish explorer Alessandro Malaspina, Spain's most prominent
exporter and navigator. Since then Malaspina Galleries have been an iconic
symbol for Gabriola.
The black bird is a raven, a bird that holds
special significance for the original inhabitants of Gabriola, the Snuneymuxw
First Nations.
