Coat of Arms

Shield Gules, parted by a saltire Argent, over all a lion rampant Or, armed and tongued Azure. The shield sometimes is topped by a mural crown Or.
Meaning:
The lion had been already a symbol of "Das Große Freie", a "County of Freemen". (for more details (in German) see German WIKIPEDIA). To the organisation belonged 14 municipalities in the Nordwald Forests between Hannover, Hildesheim and Peine. In 1248 the area became a part of the Duchy of Braunschweig-Lüneburg. Thus since the 14th century the lion of the Welfen kin was displayed in local common seals of all the 14 municipalities. The saltire is alluding to the important railway junction, which was established in the 19th century. The shield sometimes is topped by a mural crown (see left images above), sometimes without mural crown (see right images above).

Kolshorn Coat of Arms

Shield parted per fess; above Vert a lion issuant Or tongued Gules; beneath Argent a wolf trap Sable between a pair of antlers Gules.
Meaning:
In Kolshorn there existed a Vehmic Court (German: Freigericht) until the 17th century. This is symbolised by the lion issuant, also in other municipalities of the region. The antlers are symbolising that the municipality is surrounded by forests full of wildlife and they are stressing the importance of hunting in the past. The wolf trap is symbolising that the municipality belonged to Burgdorf County. The arms were approved by district governor (Regierungspräsident) of Lüneburg on 2 February 1966
