Fortuna is canting. Glückstadt means "city of good luck". Founded by King Christian IV of Denmark in 1617 the city gained numerous privileges, especially the city rights. The city was planned as a naval and mercantile base and as a rival of Hamburg. But the latter never was fulfilled. An important business in the past was whaling and hunting of pinnipeds. The tinctures are considered as valid since 1903, designed by Hupp. Fortuna appears on the very first seals of the city from 1617, in the centre of landscape, sea and ships. The existence of the simplified version can be proven on seals since 1623.
