Meaning:
Wellerode was the 3rd rural municipality (Landgemeinde) in Hesse, which was entitled to use a proper coat of arms. On occasion of the 600-years festival in 1951 this was announced in the Staaatsanzeiger of Hesse, an official journal, on 8 January 1951. The arms were introduced to the citizens on the festival in the summer of 1951. These arms were overtaken on 18 October 1972 by a resolution on 18 October 1972 of the local council of Söhrewald, which had meanwhile been established in 1971, and afterwards approved and published on 31 January 1973 by Minister of Interior of Hesse. The arms are based on the family arms of the local von-Elben kin. They are known from a seal and a deed from 1351, in which Wellerode is mentioned for the first time.
