Flag adopted on 13 September1990, according to Dirk Schönberger's Administrative Divisions of the World website. Colours from the arms, from Ralf Hartemink's website:
The arms were granted on September 13, 1990. The chequered field is derived from the arms of the County Hohenstein, to which the district historically belonged. The tree trunk symbolises the destroyed city of Nordhausen during the Second World War. The new branch symbolises the new future under a bright sky, which is symbolised by the golden field.
