Au upon Rhine Coat of Arms

Shield Azure over Vert, separated by an abased fess wavy Argent, a heron passant Argent with legs Sable.
Meaning:
The existence of local seals is proven since 1520. They displayed an eye (German: Auge), probably canting for the Latin name of the village "Augia". Since the beginnings of the 18th century the seals displayed a web-foot as additional element or alone. They first seal was restored and adopted as arms in 1901. As an eye was not considered to be satisfying as charge, the General State Archive drafted new arms, displaying the heron, due to a local rookery of herons and alluding to the former local symbol, the web-foot. The fess wavy is representing the Rhine.
