The Teutonic Order acquired the settlement from the Counts of Wertheim. King Ludwig the Bavarian granted city rights in 1323. The city was fortified and became a possession of the Bishops of Würzburg between 1655 and 1802. Wall and tower are symbolising the city status and the fortification. The inescutcheons display the arms of the Teutonic Order (cross patty) and the Bishopric of Würzburg (Franconian rake).
