The Flag

The flag of La Unión was designed by Ramón Mendoza, representing Colegio La Unión, who won the public contest organized on 19 December 2000 by the parish administration.

The flag, in dimension 1 m x 1.5 m, is composed of four horizontal stripes and four colors, arranged as follows:
1. An orange ocher stripe of 7.5 cm, placed horizontally in the upper and lower parts of the flag;
2. An emerald green stripe of 7.5 cm, placed horizontally in the upper and lower part of the flag, next to the ocher stripes.
3. A white stripe of 70 cm covering the central part of the flag.
4. In the upper left part of the flag, a green panel of 40 cm x 40 cm charged with a yellow sun covering 50% of its area.

White, the predominating color on the flag, is a symbol of peace, glory and liberty offered to the people by the Esmeraldas martyrs. White form also the upper part of the provincial flag.

Orange ocher is a symbol of diverse processed products, such as African palm, passion fruit, ripe bananas and other products that represent the main source of income for the parish.

Green is a synthesis of the exuberant vegetation that can be seen in the four wind-rose directions, and also the symbol of the aspiration to a better future promised by the generosity of the natural environment.
The sun rises between the mountains at the East. In its daily course, the sun allows the working man to grow diverse crops.
