Symbols of Terque

The flag and arms of Terque, adopted on 24 September 1987 by the Municipal Council and revised on 25 August 1988, as suggested on 24 June 1988 by the Royal Academy of History, are prescribed by Decree No. 335, adopted on 20 December 1988 by the Government of Andalusia and published on 13 January 1989 in the official gazette of Andalusia, No. 3, p. 79 (text). This was confirmed by a Decree adopted on 30 November 2004 by the Government of Andalusia and published on 20 December 2004 in the official gazette of Andalusia, No. 246, pp. 28,986-29,002 (text).

The symbols are described as follows:

Flag: Two horizontal stripes, parallel, unequal, blue and green. The upper, blue stripe covers one third of the flag, while the lower, green stripe covers the two remaining thirds of the flag. In the middle of the flag, centered [vertically], is placed the coat of arms of Terque. The coat of arms is placed so that the base of the crown lies on the limit between the two coloured fields. Accordingly, the crown is placed on a blue background while the shield proper is placed on a green background.
Coat of arms: Per pale, 1a. Vert a sun or, 1b. Vert a bunch of grapes or, 2. Argent three fesses wavy azure. A bordure azure inscribed with the writing "TERQUE 889 ERA DE VIDA Y ANDARAX" [in letters argent]. The shield surmounted by a Royal crown closed.

The sun appears as a source of material and moral wealth. The grapes symbolize the agricultural resources of the area. Year 889 alludes to the establishemnt of the Taha of Marchena, undoubtedly an important administrative division of Al Andalus. "Era de vida" (Source of Life) and "Andarax", as well as the waves, refer to river Andarax, a source of water and wealth that saved Terque during harsh times and remains its best hope. Letter "M" [in base of the bordure, not mentioned in the blazon] means "Millares", refering to an old settlement of the province.
