The municipality of Vera (15,424 inhabitants in 2013; 5,800 ha; municipal website) is located 90 km north-east of Almería.

Symbols of Vera

The flag and arms of Vera, adopted on 9 September 1993 by the Municipal Council and revised on 6 February 1996, as suggested on 30 November 1995 by the Royal Academy of Cordóba, are prescribed by Decree No. 9, adopted on 14 January 1997 by the Government of Andalusia and published on 25 January 1997 in the official gazette of Andalusia, No. 11, p. 818 (text). This was confirmed by a Decree adopted on 30 November 2004 by the Government of Andalusia and published on 20 December 2004 in the official gazette of Andalusia, No. 246, pp. 28,986-29,002 (text).
The symbols are described as follows:

Flag: Rectangular flag one and a half time longer (from hoist to fly) than high, crimson red. In the center of the flag is placed the municipal coat of arms, vertically centered.
Coat of arms: Argent a key sable surrounded by two castles proper [sandy brown] standing on rocks proper [sandy brown]. A bordure argent charged with the motto "Quien aquí ve esta ciudad en este llano formada, fue ponerie freno al turco y una llave a toda España" ["Who Sees This Town, Built in This Plain, has put it as a Lock Against the Turks and a Key to Entire Spain", the word "llave" being replaced by a horizontal key sable]. The shield supported by a double-headed eagle sable armed langued and crowned or. The shield surmounted by an Imperial crown.

The coat of arms was granted by the Catholic Monarchs in the Charter edicted in 1488 after the re-conquest of the town.
