Presentation of Bercianos del Real Camino

The municipality of Bercianos del Real Camino (202 inhabitants in 2010; 3,424 ha; municipal website) is located in the southeast of León Province, 50 km of León.

Bercianos del Real Camino was named for the origin of its resettlers, El Bierzo region (north-west of Leó Province). The "Real Camino", in full "Real Camino Francés", the French Royal Way, is, of course, the Way of St. James. Bercianos is the first stopping-off place of the Way of St. James in Leó.
Around 950, Álvaro Velaz, diaboli timens et diem iudicii terriblem tremens (scared by the devil and the Last Judgment) offerred ut merear peccatorum meorum remissio (for the remission of his sins) to the Sahagún monastery his "Villa Mayor" located in "Val de Iuvara" (Valdejuara) and adjacent of Mount Cañizal in the "Valle de Berzianos". Another document dated 963 mentions the "Villa de Bercianos". The village was later ruled by the powerful Sahagún monastery, whose rights on the region were confirmed in 1085 by a charter granted by King Alfonso VI.
