The municipality of Santa Colomba de Curueño (555 inhabitants in 2012; 9,195 ha; municipal website) is located in the northeast of León Province, 30 km from León. The municipality is made of the two villages of Santa Colomba de Curueño (89 inh.), Ambasaguas de Curueño (77 inh.), Barrillos de Curueño (122 inh.), Barrio de Nuestra Señora (105 inh.), Devesa de Curueño (64 inh.), Gallegos de Curueño (44 inh.), La Mata de Curueño (52 inh.) and Pardesivil (25 inh.).

Santa Colomba de Curueño and its villages formed in the Middle Ages the Curueño Council, which depended on the Guzmán family, Counts of Toral.
Ambasaguas was mentioned for the first time in 959 as "inter ambas aguas" (between the two rivers, here Porma and Curueño). The current name of the village was fixed in 1566.
La Mata was mentioned for the first time on a document dated 11 November 1051.
