Presentation of Villaturde

The municipality of Villaturde (166 inhabitants in 2017; 2,615 ha; municipal website), is located 50 km north of Palencia and 10 km north-west of Carrión de los Condes. The municipality is made of the villages of Villaturde, Villacuende (38 inh.), Villanueva de los Nabos (26 inh.) and Villotilla (34 inh.).
The name of the four villages refers to rural estates (Latin, villa); Villaturde was probably founded by a Turde / Jorge, Villanueva de los Nabos was a new (nueva) foundation in a place where turnips (nabos) grew profusely, Villacuende was the Count's estate, in relation with Carrión de los Condes, and Villotilla was Otilia's estate or an estate located on a small height (altillo). They were all resettled in the 10th century, together with Olmillos, which was deserted long ago.
