Symbols of Abezames

The flag and arms of Abezames are prescribed by a Decree adopted on 28 April 2010 by the Municipal Council, signed on 18 June 2010 by the Mayor, and published on 2 August 2010 in the official gazette of Castilla y León, No. 147, pp. 61,527 (text).
Designed by Vicente Tocino Letrado and Tomás Rodríguez Peñas and approved by the Chronicler of Arms of Castilla y León, the symbols are described as follows:

Flag: Rectangular flag, in proportions 2:3, made of two equal vertical stripes, at hoist red with a St. Michael archangel in white, at fly yellow with three green wheat spikes.
Coat of arms: Gules a castle-church or masoned sable port and windows azure. The shield surmounted by a Royal crown closed.

The castle-church represented on the arms must the ruined St. Savior church built on a hill that was recorded in 1420 as surmounted by a castle. Built in the 16th-18th centuries, the church was closed in 1853 and replaced by the newer parish church dedicated to St. Michael, the village's patron saint, also portrayed on the coat of arms. Since neither the Bishopric of Zamora nor the Government of Castilla y León cared protecting the ruins, deemed dangerous for the population of the village, the mayor of Abezames announced in July 2008 that the municipality would sell the ruins (La Opinión de Zamora, 28 July 2008).
