Compañía Trasatlántica Española was established on 1 June 1881 by Antonio López y López, 1st Marquess of Comillas, and other shareholders. An experienced shipowner, López established in 1847 in Havana Antonio López y Hermano, a company for coastal navigation between the Spanish Caribbean possessions. In 1857, he established in Alicante Compañía de Vapores Correos de Antonio López, which operated steamships on a scheduled line between Cádiz and Marseilles.
López was granted in 1881 a state contract for transport, mail and passengers included, between Spain, Puerto Rico and Cuba; to secure the renewal of the contract in 1868, the shipowner modernized the fleet.

López was succeeded after his death by Claudio López Bru, 2nd Marquess of Comillas, who took over in 1884 the lines operated by his main competitor, the Marquess of Campo. The company progressively increased its service to the Philippines, Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, the United States, Spanish Morocco, Spanish Guinea, Uruguay, Argentina, Chile, Peru and Panamá.
The numerous ships operated by the company were built at its own shipyard, established in 1878 in Matagorda and transferred in 1914 to the newly founded Sociedad Española de Construcción Naval.
Compañía Trasatlántica Española transported troops and material during the Spanish-American War of 1898. The company lost several vessels (Antonio López, Joaquin del Pielago, Alfonso XII) that attempted to force the American blockade.

Compañía Trasatlántica Española progressively withdrew from several lines. Ybarra took over the lines serving Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina, while Marasia took over the lines serving Chile.
In the 1980s, the company was taken over by the National Institute of Industry. Privatized in 1994, it was incorporated to Naviera del Odiel (Group Pereda). Its last operations, limited to the connection of the Canary Islands with continental Spain, ceased in 1999.
