Introduction

It should be stressedthat the flags on this page were seen only in the second Battlestar Galactica series, made recently. The original, from the 70s, didn't have these vertical flags, although some flags were seen, used in the typical manner of "normal" interior flags.
Jorge Candeias, 6 april 2006

The Twelve Colonies of Kobol

A picture of Commander (later Admiral) William Adama speaking with the flags of the 12 colonies displayed behind him can be seen here.
Erik Bell, 20 february 2006

In the series I believe the Colonies are joined in a kind of loose confederal system, cooperating mainly in defense and otherwise enjoying near-total autonomy--and even that modest degree of centralization is in the series' timeline a recent development. Odd, then, that all of these banners are essentially identical except for slight color variations and the zodiac symbols--it suggests an almost Soviet-republic kind of uniformity, improbable for what had not long ago been independent states.

I've seen the 12 flags used quite a lot as background props. Oddly, I haven't noticed a flag for the confederal body, "The Twelve Colonies of Kobol."

here is a picture of the flags on the set. The text almost sounds like the picture is from the original 70s show, but this is clearly from the new (Vancouver filmed) incarnation.
Dean McGee, 4 june 2006

The screenshot is from the conclusion of the miniseries that served as the pilot for the revived series. Of note is the central banner behind the podium, which may be the missing flag of the colonies' confederal body, "The Twelve Colonies of Kobol."

This is however an assumption from context only; I could be wrong about that. This flag makes no appearances that I've noticed in the series itself, in the places where one would expect it--in the president's office, say. Nevertheless, attached as fic-kobl.gif.
