The pennants are used by units of the same size as squadrons or flights, by commandos and security units, and by training centers and units, as prescribed by Circulaire No. 2932/DEF/EMAA/3/OP relative à la symbolique dans l'armée de l'air, 24 August 1984 (text). The air force has two sorts of pennants:
- squadron pennants are rectangular (55 cm x 40 cm);
- flight pennants are triangular (55 cm x 40 cm).
The units can choose freely the colours but caonnot use the national or foreign colours.
The obverse must bear the name and number of the unit. The reverse can bear the insignia, which must be 35 mm at most. Insignias must not be humorous, nor include the national colours or any inscription and number. The words "République française" and "Honneur et patrie" are strictly forbidden.
The pennant can have a golden fringe of 3 cm at most. The homologation number, preceded by the letter "A", is reproduced in the upper hoist. The finial is a pike (5 cm x 10 cm).
