Presentation of the SMN

The Société Maritime Nationale (SMN) was established in 1916. The company founded in 1937, together with the Compagnie de Navigation Mixte, the Société Maritime Nationale Méditerranéenne, which operated lines to Malta and Tunisia.
The SMN owned the cargo ship Arromanches, which was sunk on 23 October 1916 by the U-20, 120 miles southwest of the Isles of Scilly, and the cargo ship Brignogan, which exploded on 26 June 1918 in the port of Caen.

The house flag of the SMN, as shown in Merchant Marine Houseflags and Stack Insignia (US Navy Hydrographic Office, 1961) is divided blue-white-red by a white lozenge reaching the edges of the flag and charged with the blue letters "SMN".
