The law of 1893 granting a premium of 1.70 FRF per gross register ton and 1000 miles shipped boosted the building and exploitation of sailing ships (voiliers) in France. Accordingly, 200 2,000 to 3,000 ton ships (three and four-masters) were built within five years. Companies named Voiliers Dunkerquois, Voiliers Marseillais, Voiliers Havrais..., were created.
Voiliers Nantais, founded in 1894 in Nantes,, operated ships named after celebrities: Amiral Courbet, Amiral de Cornulier, Amiral Halgan, Cambronne and Canrobert.
The company merged in 1913 with Chargeurs de l'Ouest, another company based in Nantes.
