Coat of
Arms:
Shield Argent, three eagles Gules armed Or and ordered 2:1, the breast
of the first charged with a 6-point mullet Or. No part of the blazon: the eagle
in base is bigger.
Meaning:
The college was founded in 1341 by Robert de
Eglesfield in honour of Queen Philippa of Hainault, the wife of King Edward III
of England. The founder had been the chaplain of the Queen, who is sometimes
considered to be the co-founder. The College uses the canting arms of its
founder, whose name is derived from eagles’ field. The mullet may well be a mark
of difference, though it is highly unlikely that it indicated a third house, for
such distinctions were not used in the middle of the 14th century.
