The symbols of Opuzen are prescribed by Decision Odluka o grbu i zastavi Grada Opuzena i njihovoj uporabi, adopted on 12 October 2001 by the Town Assembly and published in the local official gazette Neretvanski glasnik, No. 3.
The symbols are described in Article 4 (text) the Town Statutes Statut Grada Opuzena, adopted on 12 October 2001 by the Town Assembly and published in Neretvanski glasnik, No. 3.
This is repeated in the current Town Statutes Statut Grada Opuzena, adopted on 24 July 2009 by the Town Assembly and published in Neretvanski glasnik - Službeno glasilo Grada Metkovića, Grada Opuzena i općina Slivno, Zažablje, Kula Norinska, Pojezerje, No. 6.

The coat of arms is prescribed as "the historical coat of arms of the Town of Opuzen. The coat of arms of the Town of Opuzen is a semicircular shield argent. In the centre of it is a tower with crenellations and with seven (4+3) windows, gules. In the base of the tower is a stylized Neretva trupica azure. The coat of arms of the Town of Opuzen is a stylized version of the historical coat of arms of the Town from the balcony of the Town Hall".
A trupica is a traditional boat used in the Neretva delta, also shown in a different rendition on the County's coat of arms.
