Presentation of Marija Bistrica

The municipality of Marija Bistrica is situated some 15 km north-west of Zagreb. It has about 7,500 inhabitants, some 1,000 living in the village of the same name.
Marija Bistrica is the site of the the national pigrimage to the Mother of God, few years ago visited by Pope John Paul II.

Flag of Marija Bistrica

The symbols of Marija Bistrica are prescribed by Statutory Decision Statutarna odluka o grbu i zastavi Općine Marija Bistrica, adopted on 22 March 2004 by the Municipality Assembly and published on 3 May 2004 in the County official gazette Službeni glasnik Krapinsko-zagorske županije, No. 6.

The symbols were designed by the Heraldic Art d.o.o. company, from Rijeka.

The flag is in proportions 1:2, yellow with the coat of arms in the middle.

The coat of arms of Marija Bistrica is "Azure the Black Madonna with Child both crowned with an old Croatian crown proper stantant over a crescent argent". The ancient Black Madonna is the revered icon of the main Croatian Marian pilgrimage site at Marija Bistrica.

The former coat of arms of Marija Bistrica is prescribed by Decision Odluka o grbu Općine Marija Bistrica, adopted on 1 July 1994 by the Municipality Assembly and published on 20 December 1994 in the County official gazette Službeni glasnik Županije Krapinsko-zagorske, No. 26.

The coat of arms is prescribed as follows:

... in a shield shape with a blue border in which are golden-yellow tendril ornaments. In the central part of the shield, on the background of red and white fields is outlined the Church of Mother of God of Bistrica, as the recognition symbol of the town of Marija Bistrica and of the "Croatian National Sanctuary of Mother of God of Bistrica". Beneath the church is inscribed in a semicircle "Marija Bistrica". The colours are: red, white, blue and golden-yellow.
