Presentation of Đakovo

Đakovo is located some 35 km south-east of Osijek. It has about 30,000 inhabitants, some 20,000 in the urban settlement itself. The town is the seat of the Diocese of Đakovo and Srijem that inherited in 1349 the Diocese of Bosnia after the Turkish conquest in 14th century. The town itself was first mentioned in the 13th century. Yet it was conquered by the Turks in the 16th century and liberated only in the end of the 17th century, when most of the town was burnt down.

Flag of Đakovo

The symbols of Đakovo were approved by the Ministry of Administration on 16 November 1996.

The flag is in proportions 1:2, horizontally divided white-purple with the coat of arms in the middle.
The purple stripe refers to the bishops who built the town.

The break of the rule of monocolored flags for towns must be due to the fact that the Ministry of Administration granted the approval for its use already in 1993, that is before October 1994, when the rules for monocolored flags were established.

Coat of arms of Đakovo

The coat of arms pictures the parish church of All Saints, in front of it St. Peter, holding a book and a key, and St. Paul, with a book and a sword.
After the liberation from the Turks, the Hađipaša mosque was rearranged into the church of All Saints, though the mosque is still clearly observable in style, one of the rare such buildings in Catholic Europe. The baroque facade shown on the coat of arms was added in the 19th century.

The approved blazon of the coat of arms:
The coat of arms of the Town of Đakovo has the form of a stylized shield that ends in a semicircle on the lower side, the height of which is 5:4 in width. In the central part of the coat of arms is the facade of the Parish Church of All Saints. To the left and right of the entrance door of the church are two saints. On the right heraldic side St. Peter holding a key in his right and a book in his left. On the left heraldic side is St. Paul holding a sword in his right hand and a book in his left. Between the saints there is a window in the shape of crossed bread. There are two six-pointed stars on the left and right sides of the roof of the tower. Colors of the coat of arms: the descriptive line of the coat of arms and the shield is golden, the roof of the church tower is red, the stars and halos of the saints are yellow, the church stands on a green lawn, the background of the coat of arms is blue.

Although the official descriptions state that the lines in the coat of arms are golden, versions that show them in black are also widely used. And you can also find a vertical flag.
