Overview

M5S (MoVimento 5 Stelle = Five Star Movement)

M5S is a political party founded in 2009 by actor/comedian Beppe Grillo, as a result from several protest rallies (Vaffanculo Day = F**k You Day) and the experience from several civic lists for municipal elections. The party does reject the term "party", as the main part of its agenda is against the Italian partitocratic system itself. It organizes itself mainly over the internet (Grillo's blog beppegrillo.it) and rejects the usual party hierarchy, so Beppe Grillo is neither president nor secretary, but (self-styled) spokesperson ("megafono"). The five stars in the name and the symbol refer to main parts of the platform: public water, sustainable transport, development, connectivity, and environmentalism.
M5S, after already having some success in regional and municipal elections in 2010-2012, became the surprise winner of the February 2013 elections: about 25% of the votes, and thus the third-strongest force after the Center-Left and Center-Right coalitions. Its intransigence, in particular its reluctance to enter in any coalition with one of the old parties, has left Italy in limbo since the elections.

The current emblem

Beppe Grillo, the party's founder and leader, announced on 15 February 2016 a change in the party's logo, substituting in the base of the circular emblem the writing "MOVIMENTO5STELLE.IT" for "BEPPEGRILLO.IT".

Article 3 of the party's Statutes (labelled "non statuto") was amended on 15 February 2016 to reflect the change, as follows:

Seal.
The name of MoVimento 5 Stelle shall be placed on a seal registered in the name of the homonymous association, which is the sole owner of the rights of use of the emblem, defined as "a red circumscribing line, in the upper half of the field, the writing 'MOVIMENTO' in black letters on a white background, the letter 'V' written in red in a fanciful font; in the lower half of the field, placed horizontally, five yellow five-pointed stars, the shade in the upper part darker than of the lower part, outlined in dark. Along the lower inner part of the circle is written 'MOVIMENTO5STELLE.IT', in a curvilinear mode, in black characters on a white background."

The change was submitted to an electronic vote, announced on 17 November 2015 in the Political Communiqué No. 56. Grillo explained that the movement he had founded through a blog had grown adult and aspired to govern Italy; accordingly, his name had to be dropped from the emblem.

The vote was organized the same day. The proposal of emblem with the amended writing received 31,343 votes out of the 40,995 certified votes, while the proposed emblem without any writing received only 9,652 votes. Grillo added that the new emblem could not be official until the next three months, for "bureaucratic reasons", and encouraged his supporters to keep using the original emblem in the meantime.

A photo taken in Rome on 19 June 2016 shows supporters of the party celebrating the victory of Virginia Raggi in the municipal election with a flag charged with the new emblem.

The party also uses, seemingly less frequently, a white flag with the party's name above the five stars.

The former emblem

The [former] flag shows the logo on a white field [1]; there are many, obviously locally produced, versions of the flag, so that the logo differs in size as does the ratio of the flag [2,3,4,5,6,7,8]. In addition, several of the local lists have slightly to heavily modified versions. Beppe Grillo personally has the rights to the logo, that shows five yellow stars under the black inscription MOVIMENTO (the "V" in red), and in base the URL.
