Overview

Flag and coat of arms of Panevezys (Panevezys county - Panevezio apskritis). The flag is according to my personal observation from the flag show of Mindaugas coronation 750th anniversary. The coat of arms is drawn according to image from the book: The Heraldry of Lithuania.

On a white field the arms of Panevezys city: a mural gate. Flag proportions 10:11, hoist and fly decorated with red bricks, fringe is silver, finial is a silver roof tower with pommel and battlements, and silver bands. The arms appeared in late 18th century, though no data about its granting is known yet. And it is known that Panevezys self-established its municipality in 1791 (using the according decree of the Four Years Parliament that allowed such self-establishments), but it was not confirmed on the state level against the destruction of state (in 1795). So some researchers guess that Panevezys has designed and used apocryphal arms, which was surprisingly kept even in early 19th century. The meaning of mural gate is obvious: city rights.
