PRD background

In 1988, the National Democratic Front was created around the presidential candidature of Cuauthemoc Cardenas Solorzano. This coalition grouped the democratic wing of the PRI, the Socialist Left and the Social Left. In 1989, on the basis of this alliance, the PRD was created. It is a center-left movement, which claims to carry on the work of Lazaro Cardenas, who nationalized the petrol industry and took land measures. Cuauthemoc Cardenas, the son of Lazaro Cardenas, is now the first elected mayor of Mexico City.
