In time for the 438th anniversary of Nombre de Dios in the year 2000, a contest was held. 44 submissions were received then presented to the Contalpa community museum. Unanimously, the jury (composed of María del Carmen Torres Meléndez and the chronicler Heriberto Hernández Velázquez) elected a design under the pseudonym "Pinocho" on 7 October. Over a silver border, at the top MDLXII is read, the year 1562, when this place was founded by Francisco de Ibarra. At the bottom, MUNICIPIO D NOMBRE D DIOS. Over brown, there are 7 stars at the top, the number of perfection associated with God, who the municipality is named after (Name of God lit.) At the bottom, a ribbon reading TRADICIÓN FE LUCHA [Tradition, Faith, Fight] as a motto. Behind the innermost shield are a crossed arrow and sword, signifying the conflicts between the two groups. At the top, hills are visible, typical of the environment. To the left, the El Saltito waterfall which Nombre de Dios is known for. To the right, the Temple of Saint Francis of Assisi, the first Catholic church in Durango. A cross divides the sections, remembering the faith.
