The coat of arms was adopted during the term of 1992-1995 under Municipal President Gabriel Corral Corral. It was designed by Dr. Javier Benítez Muñoz and some collaborators, being adopted through a call for submissions from the council. The shield is bordered in gold, reading at the top TEPETL-HUAN, the original form of its name. Behind is a crowned eagle for royalty and the Nationality holding onto the shield with its beak. In the upper-left quadrant is a hill, representing its name which means "owner of hills". To the upper-right is a deer for the fauna of the region; to the lower-left a tree for its flora, as the region is forested. To the lower-right is a minecart on tracks in front of a mine with a crossed pick and shovel above, representing mining.
