  • Presentation

The largest and oldest of the two main trade union confederations, also the one more to the left, commonly seen as close to the Communist Party. The official symbol is never drawn exactly as perscribed in the statutes: perhaps in pursuit of clarity, the sigla is always white. Or at least almost always — I’ve never seen it otherwise, but I admit the possibility that it might appear that way. Regarding the flag, by far the most common sighting is the official flag, but other variations exist, particularly one with a large symbol centered.

    Statues’ quote

The symbols are defined by the confederation’s statutes. You can find these statutes, in Portuguese, at www.cgtp.pt/acgtp/estatutoIX/estatuto.html. What follows is my translation of the chapter about the symbols:

    CHAPTER IX
    SYMBOL, FLAG AND HYMN

    ARTICLE 84º
    (symbol)

The symbol of the General Confederation of Portuguese Workers - National Intersindical, is composed of a rectangle placed vertically, with red background, on which are vertically placed a black screw-spanner[?], a yellow spike, a yellow pen nib and black and white silouettes, being the whole placed over the sigla CGTP in red which, in turn, is over the words INTERSINDICAL NACIONAL, on green.

    ARTICLE 85º
    (flag)

The flag of the General Confederation of Portuguese Workers - National “Intersindical” is a red cloth having in its upper left corner the symbol described in the previous article.
