It is a quite typical Portuguese municipal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a background gyronny of 8 of blue and yellow with centred arms..

The coat of arms is Sable on a bend wavy Azure fimbriated Argent between six ears of corn three fish hauriant Argent. Mural crown Argent with five visible towers (town rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case letters "ESTARREJA".

Meaning:
The arms celebrate local agriculture and fishing; local river is Antuã, but the municipality lies in the Aveiro lagoon with many tidal streams.

It was a quite typical Portuguese municipal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a background quartered of yellow and blue. The arms had a mural crown with four visible towers, a scroll reading "VILA DE ESTARREJA". The shield was the same as the current one.

Former flag and arms were adopted and published in the official journal Diário do Governo : I Série on 17 January 1936, the new symbols are in use at least since 26 January 2012.
